March 19, 2018 – ANN ARBOR, MICH. —
Visible Green Home® Tour is very excited to present a new event series on PHIUS+2015 Passive House. This new home construction project in Ann Arbor, Michigan is the first in the State to meet the Passive House Institute of the United States PHIUS+2015 certification requirements.
A Passive House is a home that has been conceived, designed, sited and constructed to use 80%-90% less energy than a conventionally built home. This home will be so energy efficient that by employing an advanced building envelope, using internal sources of energy gain and harnessing the free energy from the sun, it will eliminate the need for a conventional furnace… altogether.

Five tours during construction will be offered, November 11, 2017; April 7, 2018; May 19, 2018; September 15, 2018; October 27, 2018. Each tour in the five tour event series will focus on a different aspect of the home’s sustainable construction. Experts will be on hand to answer questions and provide insight on how consumers can make smart, effective green choices for their own homes. Tours may be attended individually, or collectively to get a more complete understanding of the full scope of what this project is aspiring to achieve. Separate registration is required for each tour in the series. Each tour will last one hour and space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Tours will run every hour and a half beginning at 9 AM.
Tour Event One, November 11, 2017: Introduction to Passive House/Ground Breaking
On this first of the five tour events you will learn about this exciting new approach to building called Passive House. We will share the fundamentals of the the Passive House design philosophy and specifically this project’s design evolution including its rigorous pre-construction computer-aided energy and building performance analysis. This event will begin with an informational seminar, and then complete with a visit to the site for the actual shovel-in-the-ground ‘ground breaking’ ceremony.
Tour Event Two, April 7, 2018: Passive House Envelope
At the second of the five tour events attendees will learn about the critical importance of the Building Envelope to Passive House design. The critical importance of understanding and designing for hygro-thermal performance. We will be showcasing an innovative new process to constructing Passive House buildings using pre-manufactured and pre-certified building shell components. Moving the needle towards more efficient delivery and more effective implementation of high-performance building.
Tour Event Three, April 19, 2018: Passive House Mechanical Systems
At the third of the five tour events attendees will learn more about the home’s advanced building envelope enclosure systems including the basement, windows and roof/ceiling assemblies. The key importance of the four fundamental envelope control layers and the challenge of the continuity of the air barrier will be explained and demonstrated. You will also view the early stages of construction of one of the key passive heating systems in this home: the Trombe Wall.
Tour Event Four, September 15, 2018: Passive House Mechanical Systems
At the fourth of the five tour events attendees will learn about the home’s infrastructure systems – its heating, cooling and domestic hot water systems. The close integration of the building envelope design and performance allows a Passive house to have 'micro loads' which in turn allow for 'micro systems'. You will learn from technical experts in each of the specific fields.
Tour Event Five, December 1, 2018: Passive House Performance
At the fifth of the five tour events will focus the principles of Net Zero Energy. We will discuss and illustrate in detail how the P2 Passive House project will achieve Net Zero Energy through the design and construction of its active and passive energy systems and its carefully planned relationship to the natural environment harvesting the free energy offered by the site.
Final Certification Completion Tour, TBD
After construction is completed, the tour event attendees will see the completely finished home.
