Visible Green Home® the Garden Bungalow Passive House Tour
Visible Green Home® Tour series is very excited to present our very first tour in Indiana, the Garden Bungalow PHIUS+2018 Passive House. This new home construction project in Middlebury is the first in the State of Indiana to meet the Passive House Institute of the United States PHIUS+2018 certification requirements.
A Passive House is a home that has been conceived, designed, sited and constructed to use 80%-90% less energy than a conventionally built home. This home will be so energy efficient that by employing an advanced building envelope, using internal sources of energy gain and harnessing the free energy from the sun, it will eliminate the need for a conventional furnace… altogether.
The Homes of the Future – Today
This one-time-only Visible Green Home® Tour will be offered, Saturday, February 1st, 2020. There will be three guided tour times: 12:00 pm; 1:30 pm; 3:00 pm. Experts will be on hand to show and explain this groundbreaking home and answer questions on this building revolution called Passive House. They will share how consumers can make smart, effective, energy-saving, sustainable choices for their own homes. Each tour will last one hour with 30 minutes allocated at the end of each tour to meet with attendees one-on-one and answer any individual questions you might have.
What you will learn:
Note that although this will be a completely free event, space is limited and pre-registration will be required. A separate registration is required for each individual tour attendee. These events typically sell out, so early registration is recommended.
Please be aware that this is an active construction site. Please wear suitable, durable clothing and sturdy shoes or boots for this adventure. This tour goes rain, or shine (or snow)!

What you will learn:
- You will learn about this exciting approach to building called Passive House. We will share the five fundamentals of the Passive House design approach.
- You will learn about the critical importance of the Building Envelope to Passive House design and the enclosure’s hygro-thermal performance.
- You will learn about the home’s infrastructure systems – its heating, cooling and domestic hot water systems. How the close integration of the building envelope design and performance allows a Passive house to have 'micro loads' which in turn allow for 'micro systems'
- You will learn about the challenges faced in the design of the Garden Passive House project in harvesting passive and active energy on this site.
Note that although this will be a completely free event, space is limited and pre-registration will be required. A separate registration is required for each individual tour attendee. These events typically sell out, so early registration is recommended.
